It served as the headquarters of the Ephrata Cloister, a religious community known for its celibate, communal lifestyle and intricate calligraphy and illustrations. The borough, with a population of approximately 13,000, is home to the historic Ephrata Main Theatre, a 1928 silent movie theater that still operates today.
