The city's growth was fueled by the railroad industry and later by the paper mills. The Rahr-West Art Museum, a notable attraction, is housed in a Victorian mansion and features a collection of international art. Today, Kiel has a population of approximately 3,700 people and is known for its annual Kiel Oktoberfest.
