Lansing, West Virginia, located in Fayette County, was established in the late 1800s as a coal town. The town was named after Lansing, Michigan, the home of the president of the New River Coal Company. At its peak, Lansing had a population of over 3,000 people, but it has since declined due to the decrease in coal mining. The town is home to the Lansing Fish Hatchery, a notable attraction that was built in 1896 and is one of the oldest operating fish hatcheries in the country.
