Pelahatchie is a small town in Rankin County, Mississippi, US, with a population of approximately 1,300 as of 2019. It was incorporated in 1890 and named after the Choctaw word "pela hatchie," meaning "divided river." The town is home to the historic Choctaw Agency, which was established in 1801 as a trading post and later served as the headquarters for the Choctaw Nation during the removal period in the 1830s. Today, Pelahatchie is known for its small-town charm and community events, such as the annual Pelahatchie Shootout, a popular bass fishing tournament.
