Quitman is a town in Wood County, Texas, US, founded in the mid-19th century. It was named after John A. Quitman, a Mexican-American War hero and former Governor of Mississippi. The town was incorporated in 1850 and served as a commercial center for the surrounding agricultural area. Quitman is home to the Wood County Historical Museum, located in the former home of a local pioneer family, which features exhibits on the area's history and culture. Today, the town has a population of approximately 2,000 residents and is known for its small-town charm and annual events, such as the Piney Woods Quilt Festival.
