Staunton, Illinois, US is a city in Macoupin County, founded in 1853. It was named after Sir George Staunton, a British diplomat and Oriental scholar. The city played a significant role during the Civil War as a stop on the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to freedom. Staunton is home to the historic Leander J. Cox House, a well-preserved example of Italianate architecture from the mid-19th century.
