The town was named for a nearby natural spring and experienced growth during the antebellum period due to cotton plantations. During the Civil War, Union Springs was occupied by Union troops and served as a hospital site. The town is home to the historic First African Baptist Church, a notable landmark that was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Today, Union Springs has a population of approximately 3,500 people.
