The city played a significant role during World War II as the site of a major shipbuilding facility, Camden Shipyard, which produced Liberty ships. Today, Kingsland is known for the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, a key submarine base of the United States Navy, housing several Ohio-class submarines.
