Sylmar is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California, US. It was originally inhabited by the Tongva people before the Spanish arrived in the late 18th century. The area was part of the Mission San Fernando Rey de España and later became a ranching community. In 1924, the area was renamed Sylmar, derived from the Spanish word "sycamore," due to the prevalence of sycamore trees.
