The city is named after Lake Stevens, the largest lake in Snohomish County, which covers 1,000 acres and has a shoreline of 6.7 miles. The lake was originally called "Big Lake" by indigenous peoples. The city was incorporated in 1960 and has since grown to a population of approximately 34,000 residents.
