Carthage is a city in Hancock County, Illinois, US, established in 1838. It was named after the ancient Phoenician city of Carthage. The city is known for its role in the American Civil War as the site of the first battle of the war, the Battle of Carthage, in 1861. Carthage is home to the famous Carthage Jail, where the abolitionist John Brown was held and executed in 1859. Today, the city is a small, close-knit community with a population of around 2,700 people.
