Chama, New Mexico, located in Rio Arriba County, is a small town established in 1880 during the construction of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The town was named after the Chama River, which means "crooked water" in the Tewa language. Chama is known for its well-preserved historic railroad buildings and is home to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, a narrow-gauge steam railroad that has been in operation since 1880.
