It was originally a farming community, but its growth was spurred by the development of nearby defense plants during World War II. The city is named after Charles "Charl" Klennar and Jack Leonard, who owned a popular local tavern. Charlack is known for its notable landmark, the Log Cabin College, which was built in 1836 and is one of the oldest buildings in the St. Louis area.
