Dauphin Island is a city located in Mobile County, Alabama, US. The island is approximately 14 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, and it is the easternmost point of Mississippi Sound. It was originally inhabited by Native American tribes before European explorers arrived in the 16th century. The island was named "Massacre Island" by French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville in 1699 after a battle between French soldiers and Native Americans. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, historic sites, and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, a research and education facility focused on the coastal ecosystem.
