Established in 1860, it was originally a logging town, taking advantage of the abundant timber resources in the area. The city was named after the Hoquiam River, which in turn was named by the Native American Hoquiam tribe, meaning "hungry for shellfish." The Hoquiam Timberland Library, built in 1914, is a notable attraction, known for its historic architecture and being one of the few remaining Carnegie libraries in the state.
