The township's growth was spurred by the arrival of the Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad in 1852. Marlboro is known for its rural character and the Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital, which was a notable landmark until its closure in 1998. The township is now home to numerous parks and recreational areas.
