Nitro, West Virginia, US is a city in Putnam County. It was incorporated in 1913, following the discovery of large natural gas reserves in the area. The city was named after the Nitro Explosives Company, a major employer during World War I. Nitro is home to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Green Bank Telescope, the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope.
