It was named after its founder, General Rufus Putnam, who was also one of the original members of the Ohio Company of Associates. The village was originally a part of the Symmes Purchase, a large tract of land acquired by John Cleves Symmes. Owensville is home to the Loveland Castle, a notable attraction built in the early 20th century by Harry Andrews, who was inspired by the medieval architecture of Europe.
