It was named after Eliphalet Holbrook, the Chief Justice of Massachusetts. The town has a rich industrial history, with several shoe factories and a button factory operating in the 19th century. A notable landmark is the Holbrook's Old Stone Schoolhouse, built in 1740, which is one of the oldest schoolhouses in the country. Today, Holbrook is a residential community with a population of approximately 11,000.
