How do I create a new Notion workspace?

Creating a new Notion workspace is straightforward and can help you better organize your personal projects, collaborate with different teams, or separate work from personal content. A workspace in Notion acts as a container for all your pages, databases, and collaborators, making it essential to understand when and how to create additional ones.

To create a new workspace, start by clicking on your current workspace name in the sidebar, which appears at the top left of your Notion interface. This opens a dropdown menu where you'll see the option "Join or create workspace." Click this option, then select "Create a new workspace" from the subsequent menu. You'll be prompted to name your workspace and can optionally add a description and icon to make it easily identifiable.

The main advantage of creating separate workspaces is organization and access control. You might want a personal workspace for your individual projects, notes, and planning, while maintaining separate workspaces for different companies, teams, or clients you work with. Each workspace maintains its own member list, permissions, and billing if you're using paid features, which provides clean separation between different areas of your life or work.

However, there are some limitations to consider. You cannot easily move pages between workspaces, which means you'll need to recreate content if you want to transfer it. Additionally, if you're on a paid plan, each workspace requires its own subscription, which can become expensive if you create multiple workspaces unnecessarily. Search functionality also doesn't work across workspaces, so you'll need to remember which workspace contains specific information.

Before creating a new workspace, consider whether you truly need the separation or if you could achieve your goals using Notion's organizational features within a single workspace, such as creating dedicated sections, using page hierarchies, or implementing a tagging system. Many users find that one well-organized workspace serves their needs better than juggling multiple separate environments.

Once created, you can easily switch between workspaces using the same dropdown menu where you created the new workspace, making it simple to access different areas of your Notion setup as needed.
